Tip of the Week: New Client Reading List

Transcript:

Hello, I’m Derek Merkler, fiduciary financial advisor for military veterans and in this tip of the week video, I’m sharing the three books that I expect my new clients to read.  These books are foundational to my approach to working with clients on their financial plans and are also able to go into more depth on the concepts that we discuss during our meetings.

The first book is the richest man in Babylon. Yes, I’m showing you an ebook cover because that’s the version I have.  And yes, this is a Kindle 2 of 2010 vintage.  It works just fine. The book dates back to 1926 and I expect new clients to read it within two weeks of signing on with me.  It’s short… just a few hours to read, explains the fundamental laws of wealth, and teaches you the concept of being the master of your money and not the other way around.

The second book is the Millionaire Next Door, which came out in the 90s.  There are several spinoffs and a sequel, which came out last year, but I prefer the original.  It expands in some ways upon the Richest Man in Babylon but uses real people and real data as a guide.  It explains that looking wealthy is not the same as being wealthy.  In fact, they are often inversely related.  It also goes into the fact that first generation wealth is often squandered by the next generation… and some of the causes for that. As an aside, this specific copy was given to me by my battalion XO when we were in Afghanistan in 2013.

Finally, Simple Wealth, Inevitable Wealth is the logical and detailed extension of the first two books, with actual application of the concepts and ways to approach investing. One interesting part of this book is the cover which, as you can see, is a tree.  And there is this great quote in here from Warren Buffett: Somebody is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. And I’m working with veterans to plant and grow that tree.

So there you have it.  If you haven’t read these already, get started! On a different note, I’m continuously reading books and I share what I read to my email subscribers; let me know if you want to join that group.

Thanks for watching.  And, as always, if you want to discuss anything in this video or if you want to work with me to develop your financial plan, simply send me a message.  Until next time!
